Food Preservation Program



Sonia Coyle, Travis County Family and Consumer Science Agent, would like to extend an invitation to the Food Preservation Program to be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Travis County Extension office from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon. 

Topics covered will include basics of drying fruits, vegetables and herbs. The program will be taught by Dr. Jenna Anding, AgriLife Extension Specialist and Associate Head of the Nutrition and Food Science Department at Texas A&M University in College Station.

The cost of the class is $40.00 per person and the class will be limited to 30 individuals. Each participant will receive a Ball Guide to Preserving book. The workshop is open to adults and youth who are 8 years of age and up. The deadline to register is September 24, 2016.  Please confirm with Sonia by 9/24.

Urban Roots' Youth Leaders would like to invite you to be a part of the Youth Food Jam. The Food Jam is a conference led by youth, for youth, and is a unique opportunity for teenagers across Austin and beyond to gather for a free day of fun, celebrating youth leadership, healthy lifestyles, and social justice.

The theme of this year's Food Jam is "Empowering youth leaders to challenge the perception of their generation."

The event is free, sponsored by Kerbey Lane Cafe, and lunch will be provided for attendees and facilitators by Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Travis County 4-H Food Show


Rodeo Austin Junior Leader Program



Rodeo Austin would like to invite youth to apply to be a part of our Junior Leader Program. 
  • The Junior Leader Program’s purpose is to allow young men and women the opportunity to interact and participate as volunteers, as well as serve as ambassadors for Rodeo Austin. 
  • The Junior Leaders are ages 13 – 20 and support Rodeo Austin’s 19 committees through work projects coordinated by the Junior Leaders Committee Chair.
  • All interested students must apply to the program with the attached application. They will then be contacted for an interview. 
  • Each Junior Leader is required to volunteer at one Rodeo Austin special event and 15 hours during the Fair & Rodeo.
We would love to talk with you further, and would be happy to attend any upcoming meetings to provide more information about our program. Please see the flyer and application (below) for more information.

Remember to make your entry checks payable to your club.  Club managers will then write one check to "TCYS" for all club entries and turn everything in to the Extension office.  Forms and payments must be in Extension office by Monday, October 24, 2016.  If applicable, don't forget to get the Preserved Foods Recipe form and/or the Youth Fair Project Worksheet form.

2016 PAYB Blowout




NAMI Walk



Travis County 4-H is looking for volunteers to help out at the NAMI Walk to be held on Saturday, September 24th.  We need volunteers to help fill water bowls for the dogs that are participating in the walk.  This year, we have been asked by the organizers to assist at the watering station just south of the Capitol Building on 11th Street.  Water will be supplied by the NAMI Walk and I will bring the dog bowls, but please bring a bag of doggie treats if you can.  If you are interested in participating, please email me at Nathan.Tucker@agnet.tamu.edu

The walk starts at 9:30 AM, and they have asked that we arrive by 9 AM.  We should be done by 11 AM at the latest.  Free street parking should be plentiful at that hour.  Please see the map below for the location:
