Texas 4-H members, grades 3rd-12th, are invited to
participate in this year’s Texas 4-H Refashion Retreat taking place at the
Texas 4-H Conference Center at Lake Brownwood, February 9-11.
Registration is taking place now through January 26th via the Center’s
website at, texas4hcenter.tamu.edu.
Cost is $120 for youth, and $90 per adult participant. Each 4-Her
must be accompanied by an adult that will serve as a mentor, and provide
assistance to them during the event. The fee includes: lodging in
the dorms, meals, educational session supplies, and a funds to purchase
start-up items for a refurbished outfit.
The focus of Refashion Retreat is to introduce youth to
sustainable fashion. Participation will inspire 4-Hers to take clothing
pieces purchased at the local Good Samaritan Ministries thrift store and
recycle them into a fashionable outfit they can model and wear.
Educational sessions will be taught by members of the Texas 4-H Clothing
& Textiles Advisory Board, County Extension Agents, and Extension Program
Specialist, that will teach youth competencies to build knowledge and skills
related to the Clothing & Textiles project. A few of the hands-on
workshops focus on quilting, appliqué, hand stitching, putting in zippers,
making jewelry and more! At the end of the retreat participants will
develop a commentary and model their sewn outfit in a runway fashion show for
parents and guests to experience. In the past, some 4-H members have used
the outfit they constructed at Refashion Retreat as their County 4-H Fashion
Show entry!
All participants are encouraged to participate in the Texas
4-H Clothing & Textiles Service Project that is currently taking place by
collecting clothing and accessory items on a local level, and bringing to the
retreat to be donated to the Good Samaritan Ministries in Brownwood.
A list of “What to Bring” will be provided to all registered
participants following the registration deadline. Each youth will need to
bring a sewing machine, basic sewing supplies (thread, scissors, measuring
tape, etc.), an adult chaperone, and a passion for fun and learning.
