Consumer Decision Making Project

Everyone is a consumer. Being a consumer is a role that lasts a lifetime. We all make purchases to satisfy our basic human needs for food, clothing, and shelter. As consumers, we also have a variety of wants—other goods and services we would like to have. So when we buy consumer goods and services, we are satisfying either a consumer need or a consumer want.

The Consumer Decision-Making Contest is a competitive event that enables 4-H’ers to practice making decisions based on information about a situation and four available marketplace options. This contest is an opportunity to practice marketplace knowledge and skills and to compare personal decisions with the decisions from a panel of judges who are knowledgeable about today’s marketplace and its various goods and services. This project has a contest at the San Antonio Livestock Show and there is also a District Contest.

If you would like to learn more about this project and the contests, an informational is being held at the County Extension Office on Monday, December 29th at 10:00 a.m. The program will end by noon.

Bee Keeping Essay

The State Bee Keeping Essay Contest for 2009 has been announced and this year's essay topic is: “The Dance Language of Bees”. Honey bees possess the ability to communicate thedistance and direction of resources to their nestmates. They employ a symbolic dance languagein which the position of the sun is symbolically represented by gravity, and a trained observer can watch their dances and predict where they are foraging. The use of symbolic language by an insect has made them one of the most studied animals. This year’s essay contest invites participants to learn about the honey bee’s dance language, how it was discovered, how it works and how it provides colonies the ability to find and exploit floral resources. To enter, you must be an active 4-H member. The deadline for entering is January 31, 2009. There are cash prizes for the state contest and the state winner is forwarded to the national contest where bigger cash prizes are up for grabs. To see more information, go to the link below.

Blue Bell 4-H Centennial Ice Cream is available NOW!

BRENHAM - In honor of the Texas 4-H organization's 100th birthday, Blue Bell Creameries is introducing Centennial Cupcake Ice Cream. To sweeten the deal, the Little Creamery is donating a portion of the sales to promote 4-H educational programs. Centennial Cupcake Ice Cream is a delicious cake batter ice cream with pieces of yellow cake, a chocolate icing swirl and four-leaf clover sprinkles. "We just finished celebrating our 100th birthday so we understand just how special this is," said Paul Kruse, Blue Bell CEO and president. "Centennial Cupcake is the perfect ice cream to help commemorate this momentous occasion. It has all the ingredients for a celebration, cake and ice cream. The four-leaf clover sprinkles give it that special touch."

4-H is a national organization which prides itself on teaching young people across America leadership, citizenship and life skills. There are more than 7 million members from eight to 18 years of age involved in 4-H.

Centennial Cupcake Ice Cream will be sold in Texas and across the company's 17-state distribution area. "4-H is a national organization that benefits so many young people," Kruse said. "Our inspiration for the flavor came from the Texas organization's 100th birthday, but we felt it was important to recognize all 4-H groups."

Blue Bell has also created a unique carton for this new flavor. It features four children in 4-H T-shirts and the organization's widely recognized four-leaf emblem. "We worked with 4-H to create something that symbolizes what they are all about," Kruse said. "The organization is for the kids. I think the smiling faces capture the spirit of this organization just perfectly."

(Note: So far, we've seen it at HEB and Wal-Mart locations!) If you see it at another location, please post a comment.
