Purple Up for Military Kids - April 15th

As you may know, April is "The Month of The Military Child," to support this, OMK and many other organizations across the U.S. are showing their support of military children everywhere by wearing PURPLE on April 15th, 2014 (Tuesday)! We have done this initiative in years past with great outcomes - we LOVE to be sent images of people wearing purple - from a small ribbon to an entire purple outfit, it is all great to see! We would also like to hear about any events going on solely to celebrate military children during this month in the form of a small article and a few pictures so we can post it on our social media. Feel free to digitally or physically post our purple up poster which includes some easy ways to get involved with the Purple Up! initiative that will hopefully inspire others to participate! 

Photos may be submitted to Cory and she will forward to the Military 4-H Program. 

Texas Brigades Natural Resource and Leadership Development Camp

Please help us recruit cadets (teens 13-17 years old) and CEAs as Covey (or Herd or Flock or Ranch, given the particular camp).  A 5-day tour of duty with a Brigades camp will leave one physically exhausted but mentally rejuvenated about our youth's role in conservation. Visit quailresearch.org to view a most recent testimonial of an urban Dallas girl who has now "seen the light" regarding conservation, see the Feb. issue of the e-Quail Newsletter under the heading of "intern diaries."

 

 

Texas 4-H Livestock Ambassadors

The Texas 4-H Livestock/Equine  Ambassador program strives to provide high school aged 4-H members the opportunity to develop and practice advanced leadership skills related to mentoring other youth, and to become advocates for animal agriculture.

 

Objectives:

•Prepare youth to serve in leadership capacities in youth livestock/equine programs across Texas.

•Prepare youth for the experience of the University setting, through intensive science based instruction and experiences.

•Prepare and provide opportunities for youth to serve in advocacy roles for animal agriculture, 4-H, and youth livestock/equine programs.

•Develop a heightened awareness of career opportunities in animal agriculture and advocacy.

Texas 4-H Shooting Sports Extravaganza

The 30^th Annual Texas 4-H Shooting Sports Extravaganza will take place at the Texas 4-H Conference Center on Lake Brownwood (http://texas4hcenter.tamu.edu/).  This is an event for beginner shooters to learn the processes of shooting competitively.  Basic knowledge of firearm safety, range safety, event rules, and event format is required.  No previous competitive participation is required.  The emphasis is on exploring new shooting activities and having fun.  Participants are encouraged to register for events that they have never shot competitively.  Space and time limit the event to a maximum of 400 participants.  Because this is a teaching event, no awards will be given.  Scores will be kept and tabulated, and posted for review and recognition of placing.

District 10 Shooting Sports Coach's Training - April 26-27

District 10 is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a Shooting Sports Coaches Training for Archery, Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun in Kerrville on April 26-27, 2014.

This training is open to potential coaches across the state.

Registration will be done through 4-H Connect: Registrations will open on March 17, 2014 and closes on April 11, 2014.  Please pay close attention to the deadline!

Cost is $120. Registration will cover meals and course materials.

Participants MUST have completed and passed the Background Check PRIOR to registering for the event, so if they have not completed this, they should do so IMMEDIATELY!

District 10 Livestock Judging - April 12th

For those interested in livestock judging, the District 10 Contest will be held on Saturday, April 12th in Fredericksburg. All registrations must be completed by the Extension office, therefore Cory needs to know those who are interested. There is a $40 fee per team.

Consumer Education Project Workshop - March 6th

Good consumer skills can help you get more for your money. The 4-H consumer education project gives youth the opportunity to make wise decisions when shopping. Consumer Decision Making is a judging contest designed to teach kids to observe, compare and make wise consumer decisions based on facts.

Please join us as we make quilts and blankets as part of the Texas 4-H Quilt Challenge.  We’ll also learn about the new Texas 4-H Trashion Show invitational contest.  We’ll wrap things up by going over all of the 4-H clothing project contest opportunities in preparation for the County 4-H Clothing Contests, scheduled for April 1^st.  All supplies will be provided.  Please bring a sack lunch.  Special thanks to Kim Sessions for hosting us at her shop.
