Consumer Education Project Informational - March 6th
Good consumer skills can help you get more for your money. The 4-H
consumer education project gives youth the opportunity to make wise
decisions when shopping. Consumer Decision Making is a judging contest
designed to teach kids to observe, compare and make wise consumer
decisions based on facts.

4-H Where Change Makes Cents
Look for jars in your district and give back to the Texas 4-H Center!
The Texas 4-H Council has initiated a year-long community service
project to enhance the 4-H Center and provide resources to a facility
that the entire 4-H community can enjoy! Find out where to give or visit
the Texas 4-H Foundation to donate today!
District 8 4-H Shooting Sports Coaches Training - Rifle, Archery, Pistol, Shotgun
District 8 will be hosting a Shooting
Sports Coaches Training for Archery, Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun in
Stephenville on March 8th – 9th, 2014.
This training is open to potential coaches across the state.
Registration will be done through 4-H Connect: Opens today
and Closes on February 24, 2014. Please pay close attention to
the deadline!
Cost is $120
Participants MUST have completed
and passed the Background Check PRIOR to registering for the event, so if they
have not completed this, they should do so IMMEDIATELY!
NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Texas Agricultural Irrigation Association Scholarship
The
Dick Laursen Memorial Scholarship was created in honor of Dick Laursen,
a life-long irrigation specialist. Dick was born in 1942 into a
Nebraska ranching/farming family. He began his career
as a purchasing agent for a pivot manufacturer; then moving on to Rain
Bird Ag before partnering to open SWISH, Inc., an irrigation company.
With his partners, Dick spent the rest of his life building SWISH, until
his death in 1998.
TAIA will award scholarships based on the applicant’s qualifications. Scholarships will be available to registered, full-time students either entering college or continuing a college education. Graduate students are also eligible. A recommendation from a TAIA member would be beneficial but is not mandatory. Scholarship funds will be given to the student's selected college to use towards enrollment expenses.
The scholarship committee will start taking applications October 1, 2013. The deadline for the 2014 scholarship will be March 1, 2014.

- Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, reporting GPA at end of each semester
- 1000 minimum word essay with application
- Not required to be a Texas resident
- $500 per semester / $4000 total maximum / 4 year maximum

County Council Meeting - Monday, January 27th
Reminder
that the county council meeting will be held on Monday, January 27th at
the county extension office. The council meeting will start at 7:00 pm.
We will have a guest speaker on photography so this will be a great
meeting council delegates and any 4-H member to attend. With the county,
district and state photography contests coming up in the next couple of
months, this will be a great learning experience for all in attendance.

Fancy Feathers chicken show is professionally judged poultry show set up and
run
by
Fancy Feathers 4-H members. There will be adult and youth classes as well as
a
backyard
class for both bantam and standard sized birds. You will be able to see
over
40
varieties of chickens originating from all parts of the world, including the
classics,
such
as Rhode Island Reds to the more exotics, such as Seramas. In addition to
seeing
the
birds you will be able to participate in a cluck-off, where the contestants
perform
their
best imitation of a chicken, participate in our raffle/silent auction, view or
enter an
egg
show, or have fun at the Kid’s Corner, or the Judging Competition for adults!

Dog Project Certifications
Dog Certification is now open on 4-H Connect and will close
on January 10, 2014 at midnight. Detailed instructions on how to certify a dog may be found by clicking here. If there are

Most significant is the 2014
Texas 4-H Dog Show Catalog is now posted on-line at http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/dogshow it
outlines the rules for the 2014 show. Please take note of some
significant changes.
- The 2014 show will be held in Belton, Texas at the Bell County Expo July
11-13, 2014.
-
New exhibition class Treibball has been added. Treibball is also known as
urban herding where dogs “herd” exercise balls to a goal using basic herding
techniques.
- We
have also added a new Foster/Family Dog Program to encourage fostering
dogs. These dogs do not have to meet the six month ownership requirement
and will be eligible for Canine Good Citizenship, Costume, Tricks, Obedience
and Rally.
Clothing and Textiles Project Leader Training - January 21st
There will be a project leader training for
Clothing and Textiles on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. Check out the flyer
