Farm Bureau Leadership Conference

Attention Current Sophomores and Juniors!!!! If you are interested in the opportunity below, please email Cory at cmtalley@ag.tamu.edu. There is an application and selection process. The event takes place June
18-22 at Tarleton State University

Since 1963, more than 13,000 high school juniors and seniors have attended the annual Texas Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference (formerly known as the Citizenship Seminar) each summer.

The purpose of the training school is to give selected high school students in Texas a better understanding of the various forms of government and their responsibilities as citizens. Comparisons of the different kinds of economic systems are outlined. Students are selected by county Farm Bureaus with the cooperation of local school officials. Transportation, rooms, meals and a small tuition fee are financed by the sponsoring county Farm Bureaus, sometimes with cooperation of local service clubs.

The conference runs three full days and includes lectures, discussions, and films by outstanding authorities in government, history, and economics. Recreation is also provided.
Students are encouraged to meet with school and civic groups upon their return home to share the information and knowledge they have received.

Students may also participate in the Free Enterprise Speech Contest, in which scholarships are awarded.

State Youth Water Camp

The 2012 State Youth Water Camp will be July 8-12, 2012, at the Bentley 4-H Center in Monahans, TX.  The Camp is open to high-school youth who are interested in water conservation and water issues, and who are willing to work in teams. Adult project leaders may also apply, but must pass a background check before participating.

State Youth Water Camp is a five day educational camp planned to teach high school youth the importance of water stewardship, train them in water conservation and preservation, and illustrate how our water resources are being used by industry, agriculture and municipalities. We accomplish this through hands-on experiences, guest speakers, and field trips. The Camp is co-sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Upper Pecos Soil & Water Conservation District.

Applications and information are available at:  http://ward.agrilife.org/ or from any AgriLife Extension office. Applications must be received in the AgriLife Extension office in Ward County by May 18, 2012. Participants will be informed of their acceptance by May 31, 2012.  Registration is $150.00, due in the AgriLife Extension office in Ward County by June 8, 2012.  Soil and water conservation districts, ground water conservation districts and youth organizations are sources of scholarships. Water Camp is open to all Texas youth, but space is limited so we encourage early registration.

For more information, call the AgriLife Extension office in Ward County at 432-943-4112/2682.

Texas 4-H Calf Roping and Break-A-Way School

On June 17-21, 2012, the Statewide Texas 4-H Calf Roping and Break-A-Way School will be held in Stephenville, Texas.  The school will be held at the Tarleton State University Equine Arena.   This event has been developed in order to encourage young people in 4-H to develop leadership ability and to exercise their abilities in working with younger members in roping activities in 4-H.    Participation is open to all districts of the state, with applications being accepted on a first-come, first- serve basis with first priority to those boys and girls who are 12 years of age and older.

The cost of the school will be $380.00 for the week. There is a limited number of indoor stalls.  Therefore, a maximum of one horse per applicant.

This will include group insurance, meals, lodging, stall rent for one horse and will cover the cost of practice calves used in the teaching process.  Most meals will be taken in the Tarleton State University Dining Hall.  All students will be housed in the Tarleton State University Dormitories.  Students will not be allowed to stay elsewhere.

It is necessary for adult chaperons, either in the form of Adult Leaders or County Extension Agents, during the school.   Each county which sends participants should encourage one or more agents or leaders to attend.   We will need at least one female adult leader to serve as chaperon for the girls.   Cost for an adult leader chaperon is $175.00 each to attend.  If chaperon is bringing a horse, add a $25.00 stall fee. Expenses continue to increase. The intent of the Texas 4-H Calf Roping School is not to make a profit. However, we must be able to cover our financial obligations.

Sign up will be on a first come-first serve basis.  The maximum number which can be accommodated is 48.

HORSE  RULE -  All horses brought to the roping school must have had a Negative Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) test within the past 12 months.  An accredited veterinarian can take care of the testing procedures and provide you with a VS 10-11, EIA test form.  You must send in a copy of the VS 10-11 form for every horse you intend to bring to the school.  Copies must be mailed in with your roping school application.

Participant applications can be found at www.travis4h.com

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
This year all of the money (deposit and balance) must be sent to The Texas 4-H Foundation.  The balance needs to be at the Foundation no later than JUNE 1, 2012.

A separate sheet attached to the entry form will allow you to fill out names and return with your deposit to the address shown on the form to the Texas 4-H Foundation.  Print off a second copy of this sheet to send with your balance.
