Are you a Pedernales Electric Cooperative Customer?

Essay contest for youth who have completed their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school
by June 10, 2010 and whose parent/legal guardian are a PEC member or receive Pedernales Electric Services at their residence.

If you fall under the requirements, please let us know so we can provide you more detailed information. Entry deadline is October 26, 2009.

4-H One Day - Walk for NAMI

Many of you have read and hopefully have seen the 4-H One Day video. On October 10, 2009 4-H'ers across the state will be giving back to their community. Many of the clubs may choose to coordinate their own community service activity. As the 4-H Agent, I have chosen to participate in a community service as well. Each of you are more than welcome to join me for this event. I have decided to participate in the

NAMIWALKS for the Mind of America
(National Alliance on Mental Illness)

Date: Saturday, October 10, 2009
Location: Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake
Registration & Check-In: 8:00 am

Walk Begins: 9:00 am

Distance: 5 K

If you would like to participate, please go to the following website and join the Travis County 4-H Team. http://www.nami.org/namiwalks09/TEX/tc4h. This will take you to my page and below my name on the left side, click on Team: Travis County 4-H. Once on the team page, you can sign up to join the team and create your own page. You can then email your page link to friends and family for sponsorships as a walker. For those under the age of 18, you will need to complete a paper registration form. Please let me know of your interest at cmtalley@ag.tamu.edu.

Once I have an idea of how many are willing to participate, I will email you more information.

State Shooting Sports Results

Back in July, 4-H Shooting Sports members participated in the state games held in Helotes, TX. Their results have been posted to the travis4h.com website (click on the "upcoming events" tab). Please check out their successful year.

San Antonio Stock Show Calf Scramble

4-H members interested in participating in the San Antonio Livestock Show Calf Scramble need to contact Cory. To be eligible, members must have reached their 12th birthday, but not their 18th by January 1, 2010.

All required forms including medical release will need to be completed with all original signatures and document needs to be notarized. Completed forms will need to be returned to the County Extension Office by September 21st.

****Completing the forms does not guarantee that you will be selected to compete in the scramble. There is a selection from all applications submitted throughout the district.****

State Lamb and Goat Validation

If you plan to exhibit lambs or goats at the Travis County Youth Show or any of the major stock shows in the spring, you will need to purchase an ear tag for each animal you plan to have.

Tags are $9.00 each. Checks may be made payable to Travis 4-H and must accompany an order form which may be found on the travis4h.com website.

If you are unfamiliar with this process, orders are taken now (due August 28, 2009) and all lambs and goats will be validated on October 20, 2009.

If you have any additional questions, please call us at 854-9600 and ask for Cory, John or Brad.

4-H Clothing Community Service Project

If you are a 4-H member interested in the clothing and textiles project, I have a community service project ready to go. All of the linens that were used at the banquet need to have the edges hemmed or surged so that we can use them in the upcoming years. El Paso 4-H'ers in Need of Assistance!!

AgriLife Extension Family,

This past weekend several El Paso 4-H members were burned while working a food booth at a 4-H fundraiser. Three of those youth are now in the Burn ICU at University Medical Center, Lubbock, TX.

Many 4-H families are already providing the Extension faculty in Lubbock with non-perishable foods, books, cards, and letters to support these families during this most trying time. If you would like to contribute any of these items, please contact Cory and bring those items to the office by August 19th.
Also, the Texas 4-H Foundation has set up an account for people to make financial donations to help these 4-H families with meals and lodging. If you would like to support these young 4H'ers and their families, please send your checks or money orders to:

4-H Youth Invited to Special Event at Bob Bullock Museum

The Museum will be offering free admission for our 4-H friends, employees and their families, on August 12 from 8 am to 3 pm. The Museum will host a live satellite conference with Astronaut Colonel Timothy Kopra (a native Texan) aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in the IMAX Theatre. We will offer and host complimentary educational activities including on-site experiments, autograph signings, hands-on NASA artifacts, a discovery dome inflatable planetarium, & Space Station 3-D IMAX screenings. A simulcast of the downlink will be projected on the timeline video wall on the 2nd floor.
