Consumer Decision Making Project

Everyone is a consumer. Being a consumer is a role that lasts a lifetime. We all make purchases to satisfy our basic human needs for food, clothing, and shelter. As consumers, we also have a variety of wants—other goods and services we would like to have. So when we buy consumer goods and services, we are satisfying either a consumer need or a consumer want.

The Consumer Decision-Making Contest is a competitive event that enables 4-H’ers to practice making decisions based on information about a situation and four available marketplace options. This contest is an opportunity to practice marketplace knowledge and skills and to compare personal decisions with the decisions from a panel of judges who are knowledgeable about today’s marketplace and its various goods and services. This project has a contest at the San Antonio Livestock Show and there is also a District Contest.

If you would like to learn more about this project and the contests, an informational is being held at the County Extension Office on Monday, December 29th at 10:00 a.m. The program will end by noon.

Texas 4-H Council Community Service Project 2009

The Texas 4-H State Council has partnered with the Starlight Children's Foundation as an on-going venture to provide an opportunity for Texas 4-H Members to write encouraging messages to children and their families who have been diagnosed with a major illness. These cards will be distributed throughout Texas by the Starlight Children's Foundation.

Logistics: Holiday Card Distribution
  • A one dollar ($1.00) donation is requested per card (more if desired by the contributor) to assist with the efforts of the Foundation.
  • Write a message on the cards provided (may be picked up from the County Extension Office)
  • Contributors will be able to place a star on the web site (http://www.millinstars.org/) under the Texas 4-H Galaxy. The contributor is to keep one side of the card with the number to put their star on the web site. Additional attributes can be added to their star for an additional donation while on the website.
  • For all money collected, a money order will need to be purchased and mailed along with the cards to our designated District 10 State Council Member. That information will be released as people are ready to mail their cards and money orders. (Money orders made payable to: Starlight Children's Foundation.

This is round 1 of this project, more will be coming in the future.

***Attention Seniors Graduating in 2009***
For those graduating this year and interested in completing the Texas 4-H Foundation Scholarship, a workshop is being offered on Thursday, November 20, 2008, 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office.

Last year Texas 4-H awarded over 220 4-H youth over 2 million dollars in scholarships at Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station. Take the opportunity to showcase your 4-H experiences and work to try to be one of those 220 in 2009.

The workshop is open to others who are looking to complete the application in the upcoming years. The focus will be on how to complete the application and learning the steps of the scholarship process. Completing a recordbook is not a requirement to complete this application, but always helpful. Bring your most current book if you have one.
